Proposed Change in the Parish By-Laws
To be voted on at the Annual Parish Meeting, November 18
Current By-Law, Section VIII, Part A
The Vestry shall consist of six elected voting members of the congregation who subscribe to the Canonical Declaration and make such promise before taking office.
Proposed Change:
The Vestry shall consist of six seven elected voting members of the congregation who subscribe to the Canonical Declaration and make such promise before taking office.
Reason:
The current by-law mandating six vestry members allows for the possibility of a tie, requiring the rector to cast the deciding vote. Having seven vestry members not only addresses the growing membership of St Michael’s, but also eliminates the possibility of a tied vestry vote.
Current By-Law, Section VIII, Part G
The Rector is ex-officio chairman and presiding officer of the Vestry with all the rights and privileges of any Vestryman except that he votes only in the case of a tie, but in no case shall he vote on his own compensation. In the absence of the Senior Warden, or in the absence of both, the Junior Warden shall preside. In the absence of all three, the meeting shall not convene.
